prototypical implementations ; working packages in project phase II
In this technical report, we present the concepts and first prototypical
imple- mentations of innovative tools and methods for personalized and
contextualized (multimedia) search, collaborative ontology evolution, ontology
evaluation and cost models, and dynamic access and trends in distributed
(semantic) knowledge. The concepts and prototypes are based on the state of
art analysis and identified requirements in the CSW report IV
prototypical implementations
In this technical report, we present prototypical implementations of
innovative tools and methods developed according to the working plan outlined
in Technical Report TR-B-09-05 [23]. We present an ontology modularization and
integration framework and the SVoNt server, the server-side end of an SVN-
based versioning system for ontologies in the Corporate Ontology Engineering
pillar. For the Corporate Semantic Collaboration pillar, we present the
prototypical implementation of a light-weight ontology editor for non-experts
and an ontology based expert finder system. For the Corporate Semantic Search
pillar, we present a prototype for algorithmic extraction of relations in
folksonomies, a tool for trend detection using a semantic analyzer, a tool for
automatic classification of web documents using Hidden Markov models, a
personalized semantic recommender for multimedia content, and a semantic
search assistant developed in co-operation with the Museumsportal Berlin. The
prototypes complete the next milestone on the path to an integral Cor- porate
Semantic Web architecture based on the three pillars Corporate Ontol- ogy
Engineering, Corporate Semantic Collaboration, and Corporate Semantic Search,
as envisioned in [23]
state of the art analysis ; working packages in project phase II
In this report, we introduce our goals and present our requirement analysis
for the second phase of the Corporate Semantic Web project. Corporate ontology
engineering will improve the facilitation of agile ontology engineering to
lessen the costs of ontology development and, especially, maintenance.
Corporate semantic collaboration focuses the human-centered aspects of
knowledge management in corporate contexts. Corporate semantic search is
settled on the highest application level of the three research areas and at
that point it is a representative for applications working on and with the
appropriately represented and delivered background knowledge
How scent and nectar influence floral antagonists and mutualists
Abstract Many plants attract and reward pollinators with floral scents and nectar, respectively, but these traits can also incur fitness costs as they also attract herbivores. This dilemma, common to most flowering plants, could be solved by not producing nectar and/or scent, thereby cheating pollinators. Both nectar and scent are highly variable in native populations of coyote tobacco, Nicotiana attenuata, with some producing no nectar at all, uncorrelated with the tobacco's main floral attractant, benzylacetone. By silencing benzylacetone biosynthesis and nectar production in all combinations by RNAi, we experimentally uncouple these floral rewards/attractrants and measure their costs/benefits in the plant's native habitat and experimental tents. Both scent and nectar increase outcrossing rates for three, separately tested, pollinators and both traits increase oviposition by a hawkmoth herbivore, with nectar being more influential than scent. These results underscore that it makes little sense to study floral traits as if they only mediated pollination services
Intra- and inter-laboratory agreement of the FAM19A4/mir124-2 methylation test: results from an international study
BACKGROUND: HPV-based cervical screening detects women at an increased risk of cervical cancer and precancer. To differentiate among HPV-positive women those with (pre)cancer, triage testing is necessary. The detection of cancer-associated host-cell DNA methylation (FAM19A4 and hsa-mir124-2) in cervical samples has shown valuable as triage test. This multicenter study from 6 collaborating European laboratories and one reference laboratory was set out to determine the intra- and inter-laboratory agreement of FAM19A4/mir124-2 DNA methylation analysis utilizing the QIAsure Methylation Test. METHODS: Agreement analysis for the QIAsure Methylation Test was assessed on high-risk HPV-positive cervical specimens (n = 1680) both at the level of the assay and at the full workflow, including bisulfite conversion. RESULTS: Intra- and inter-laboratory assay agreement were 91.4% (534/584; 95% CI 88.9-93.5; Îș = 0.82) and 92.5% (369/399; 95% CI 90.0-94.7; Îș = 0.83), respectively. The inter-laboratory workflow (bisulfite conversion and assay combined) agreement was 90.0% (627/697; 95% CI 87.5%-92.0%; Îș = 0.76). CONCLUSION: These data show that the QIAsure Methylation Test performs robust and reproducible in different laboratory contexts. These results support the use of the QIAsure Methylation Test for full molecular screening for cervical cancer, including primary HPV testing and triage testing by methylation analysis
Land, Labour and Capital Markets in European Agriculture: Diversity under a Common Policy. CEPS Paperback. October 2013
Well-functioning factor markets are an essential condition for the competitiveness and sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas. At the same time, the functioning of the factor markets themselves is influenced by changes in agriculture and the rural economy. Such changes can be the result of progress in technology, globalisation and European market integration, changing consumer preferences and shifts in policy. Changes in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) over the last decade have particularly affected the rural factor markets. This book analyses the functioning of factor markets for agriculture in the EU-27 and several candidate countries. Written by leading academics and policy analysts from various European countries, these chapters compare the different markets, their institutional framework, their impact on agricultural development and structural change, and their interaction with the CAP. As the first comparative study to cover rural factor markets in Europe, highlighting their diversity â despite the Common Agricultural Policy and an integrated single market â Land, Labour & Capital Markets in European Agriculture provides a timely and valuable source of information at a time of further CAP reform and the continuing transformation of the EU's rural areas
